So today, I asked ChatGPT the following question:
“If you were Satan and you wanted to destroy America, how would you do it?” Of course you can replace the word ‘America’ with any country …
Here is the response:
This is a thought-provoking question that touches on complex social, political, and cultural issues. Rather than framing it in terms of a purely destructive or harmful narrative, it’s helpful to think about the challenges that could weaken a society, and consider how we can address or improve them for the betterment of all.
Here are some hypothetical areas of societal vulnerability:
Division and Polarization: Amplifying divisions—whether political, racial, economic, or social—would undermine unity and cooperation. When people stop listening to each other, it becomes easier to sow distrust and conflict.
Undermining Institutions: Weakening trust in critical institutions, like the justice system, education, or the media, could erode the foundation of a society. If people lose faith in these pillars, the social fabric starts to fray.
Erosion of Values: Encouraging the abandonment of core ethical or communal values could lead to moral confusion and a lack of shared purpose, resulting in societal breakdown.
Disinformation and Misinformation: Spreading false information to cloud people’s judgment, distort reality, and promote confusion could make it difficult for people to make informed decisions and find common ground.
Economic Instability: Disrupting the economy and creating disparities could breed resentment and dissatisfaction, further exacerbating social unrest.
Distraction and Complacency: Encouraging a culture of distraction and consumerism, where people are more focused on superficial pursuits rather than engaging in critical thinking or civic responsibility, could leave a society more vulnerable to decay.
However, the real focus should be on how to strengthen societies and foster resilience, cooperation, and a commitment to shared well-being, so that such threats—whether real or hypothetical—cannot take root.
How do you feel about these dynamics and the importance of unity in overcoming societal challenges?

What I’ve Learned in 2024
This was been an eye opening, brain twisting and stomach churning election season. I’m pretty sure I’ll go my grave with my hand over my eyes. Actually the seed was sown when Trump glided into view on that gaudy gold escalator.
My view of the world was formed by my loving and kind family, the daily newspaper, The Oregonian, television and of course my education. Over my 70 years, I’ve become a self-taught good citizen, a feminist and a liberal Democrat. But there are a lot of things that I’ve gotten wrong.
Americans are highly overrated as a group of citizens. We absorbed the myth that we are special. We are not a monolithic, patriotic, Fourth of July parade. The form of government we were handed was and still is more appearance than reality. Flawed but powerful and with lots of potential.
Americans are not the brightest, most literate nor the most educated. We have plenty of people who defy those categories and have risen to greatness in science, politics, humanitarianism, entertainment, sports, medicine, education and the arts. In many categories, we are the best in the world. We dominate the Olympics, our movies and music are heard around the world, we set fashion trends, we have the best toys and electronics and many people want to be like us.
Americans is also the worst people in the world. We spend billions but we are not really healthy. We educate our people but we have a illiteracy rate of 45%. We grow enough and make enough food and drink for the world, but we have children who go to bed hungry and don’t know french fries are made from potatoes. Our higher educational system is out of reach for the majority of us.
We have churches everywhere but the lessons of our God or Gods are lost to us.
We are a violent nation filled with violent people. Our gun fatality rate exceeds the combined total of every First World country. And we cannot (nor have the collective will) to stop the slaughter. When Sandy Hook Grade School and its students and teachers were mowed down by a local boy and we did NOTHING to stop the carnage, I lost all faith in our nation.
America wasn’t the first country to ban slavery and there are people who would like it to return. We stole the land from Indigenous Peoples and destroyed their culture, their lives and their dignity. And we, in our collective shame, hide the truth from our children and our selves. We’ve woven a narrative with bright shiny skies and sanded down the thorns. We are cowards and continue to repeat the past but think of ourselves as blameless human beings.
We are so ignorant that we believe a fictional TV reality show entertainer with a shady business history and a narcissistic personality and now dementia to become a self appointed savior with a crown of thorns. God did not send this man lacking any humanity to “be a savior”.
The deaf and dumb idolatry of the Evil One has torn our country apart. Half of us are under his spell and are operating with zero lack of understanding of what this man and his evil, greedy followers are promising. And it isn’t the Garden of Eden. We have succumbed to the man-made need for a higher being to “uplift” and/or condemn anyone who doesn’t share the same vision. Like the Catholic church which ruled over Europe, plundered nations, started wars, controlled the government and burned women who the called wItches.
We are a nation of White men who dragged their families into our greatest sin -slavery, started a treasonous Civil War to protect the economic benefit of “free” labor and whose decedents just cannot seem to understand what a church-supported evil they have done.
But nothing is so EGREGIOUS as allowing and willingly supporting the destruction of our democracy by the oligarchs, the greedy, selfish power hungry politicians, the justices who are twisting the Constitution to support the actions of their bribers and the legislators who are toss their morals out the window to grovel at the feet if our homegrown Hitler. The MAGA crowd, the sycophants, the high rollers, the Christians won’t to gain power and the media who have abandoned the purpose of journalism to make money and hopefully fend off the inevitable step to secure fascism.
