Gaza Genocide Deaths: 73,000 (Western Media) Versus 875,000 In First 2 Years (Science)

Based on data and methodology published by expert epidemiologists in the leading media journal The Lancet, it can be readily estimated that in the first 2 years of the Gaza Genocide Gazan deaths from violence and deprivation totalled 875,000. However Western Mainstream media (MSM) ignore deaths from deprivation and presently report about 73/,000 Gaza deaths due to violence. Genocide-minimizing and Zionist-perverted MSM are under-counting both violent deaths and 4-fold greater deaths from imposed deprivation.

(1). Palestinian Ministry of Health data imply 71,000 Gazan violent deaths in the first 2 years of the Gaza Genocide.

The Palestinian Ministry of Health reported “[in] October 7, 2023 – January 26, 2026 at least 71,660 Palestinians have been killed [violently] with thousands still under the rubble…. At least 171,419 Palestinians have been injured, many with life-altering wounds… Since the ceasefire 486 Palestinians have been killed” [1].

Accordingly 71,660-486 = 71,174 Gazans were killed in 7/10/2023-10/10/2025 or about 71,174/ 733 days = 97 per day or 194 in 2 days. Accordingly {violent] Gazan deaths in 7/10/2023- 7/10/2023 totalled about 71,174 – 194 = 70,980 or about 71,000 violent deaths in 2 years.

However as outlined below, a sophisticated epidemiological statistical analysis published in The Lancet indicates far more violent Gazan deaths.

(2). Expert epidemiologists estimated 64,250 violent Gaza deaths in 269 days or 175,000 violent Gaza deaths in 2 years (731 days).

Expert epidemiologists published in the leading medical journal The Lancet estimated that 64,260 Gazans had died violently by 30 June 2024 (day 269 of the killing): “Accurate mortality estimates help quantify and memorialise the impact of war. We used multiple data sources to estimate deaths due to traumatic injury in the Gaza Strip between Oct 7, 2023, and June 30, 2024… We used a three-list capture–recapture analysis using data from Palestinian Ministry of Health (MoH) hospital lists, an MoH online survey, and social media obituaries. After imputing missing values, we fitted alternative generalised linear models to the three lists’ overlap structure, with each model representing different possible dependencies among lists and including covariates predictive of the probability of being listed; we averaged the models to estimate the true number of deaths in the analysis period (Oct 7, 2023, to June 30, 2024). Resulting annualised age-specific and sex-specific mortality rates were compared with mortality in 2022… We estimated 64 260 deaths (95% CI 55 298–78 525) due to traumatic injury during the study period, suggesting the Palestinian MoH under-reported mortality by 41%. The annualised crude death rate was 39·3 per 1000 people (95% CI 35·7–49·4), representing a rate ratio of 14·0 (95% CI 12·8–17·6) compared with all-cause mortality in 2022, even when ignoring non-injury excess mortality. Women, children (aged <18 years), and older people (aged ≥65 years) accounted for 16 699 (59·1%) of the 28 257 deaths for which age and sex data were available” [2].

In summary, Jamaluddine et al. estimated 64,260 deaths “due to traumatic injury in the 269-day study period” of “between Oct 7, 2023, and June 30, 2024” [2]. Accordingly (assuming the same rate of killing) 64,260 killed x 731 days)/269 days = 175,000 Gazans violent deaths by 7 October 2025 (day 731 i.e. after 2 years of killing) [2, 3].

(3). 4 deaths from deprivation per violent death and 175,000 violent deaths means 700,000 Gazan deaths from deprivation and 875,000 Gaza deaths in total over 2 years.

The wartime ratio of indirect deaths from imposed deprivation to direct, violent deaths ranges from 2 (Iraq War, 1990-2011) to 16 (Afghan War, 2001-2021) [4, 5]. UNICEF Refworld: “The ratio of people killed in war to those dying indirectly because of a conflict is explored in the chapter on indirect deaths (INDIRECT CONFLICT DEATHS). Studies show that between three and 15 times as many people die indirectly for every person who dies violently” [6].

Expert epidemiologists “conservatively” estimated 4 deaths from imposed deprivation in Gaza for every violent death [7, 8], this indicating total Gaza deaths being 5 times the violent deaths. Thus from Jamaluddine et al. [2] violent deaths totalled 64,260 (by day 269 or about 9 months) and hence after 9 months there had been 4x 64,260 = 257,000 indirect deaths from deprivation for a total of 321,000 Gazan deaths [9].

Similarly, from Jamaluddine et al. [2] violent deaths totalled 64,260 (by day 269) and hence by 25 April 2025 (day 569) 136,000 Gazans had died violently, 544,000 had died non-violently and 680,000 had died in total [10-21].

Likewise after 2 years (731 days) of the Gaza Genocide, 64,260 x 731/269 = 175,000 Gazans had died violently (directly), 700,000 had died non-violently (indirectly), and 875,000 Gazans had died in total [22-46].

(4). Over 300,000 children have been killed in the US-Israeli-imposed Gaza Genocide.

In the absence of other pertinent data one could assume that the relative proportions of children, women and men killed through deprivation were the same as for the reported violent deaths. Thus Euro-Med Human Rights Watch reported violent Gaza deaths being 37.1% children, 23.7%, women and 39.1% men [47]. Applying these relative proportions to 875,000 Gaza deaths from violence and deprivation over 2 years, one estimates that the dead included 325,000 children, 207,000 women and 341,000 men [22-46].

However this may underestimate child mortality from deprivation because it does not account for the extreme vulnerability of children under five, whose deaths represent about 70 percent of avoidable deaths from deprivation in impoverished countries (see Gideon Polya, “Body Count. Global avoidable mortality since 1950” [48]). Assuming Euro-Med Human Rights Watch violent mortality data [49] and assuming that under-5 infant deaths were 70% of avoidable deaths from deprivation [48] it was estimated that by 25 April 2025 the 680,000 Gaza dead included 479,000 children (380,000 under-5 infants) , 63,000 women and 138,000 men [14]. However one is concerned about this high estimate of under-5 infant deaths (based on 70% of avoidable deaths from deprivation in impoverished countries being under-5 infants [49]) because despite the blockading and devastation of Gaza, it has shown extraordinary resilience in providing health care despite the devastation and deprivation of its hospital system and Zionist Israeli killing and injuring of health care workers (for the shocking statistics see [22]). Indeed crucially Occupied Palestine has a literacy rate of 98% [50].

Accordingly, given these uncertainties, one makes minimal assumptions in conservatively estimating the breakdown of 875,000 Gazan deaths over the first 2 years of the Gaza Genocide as including about 325,000 children, 207,000 women and 342,000 men [22-46].

(5). Zionist-perverted Western Mainstream media asserting about 73,000 Gazans killed in 2 years (under-counting 875,000 Gaza deaths by a factor of 12) is egregious racism, genocide-denial, holocaust-denial and genocide complicity.

Average violent Gaza deaths totalled 175,000 in the first 2 years (731 days) giving a violent killing rate of 175,000 deaths/ 731 days = 239 killed violently per day. Since the ceasefire on 10 October 2025 the rate of violent killing has greatly decreased. Thus Al Jazeera (15 July 2026): “According to the Government Media Office in Gaza, there have been 3,689 recorded Israeli violations during the 275-day ceasefire, resulting in 1,122 Palestinians killed and 3,599 injured. Furthermore, the humanitarian situation continues to deteriorate under the ceasefire, with Israel allowing only 35 percent of the expected aid trucks and 36 percent of permitted travellers to cross the borders” [51]. In 10 October 2025-15 July 2026 there have been 1,122 Palestinians killed/ 278 days = 4 killed violently each day. Accordingly estimates of deaths in the Gaza Genocide were confined to the 2-year period before the ceasefire.

Some examples of Mainstream media under-counting of Gazan deaths in the first 2 years are given below:

(i). UK BBC (30 November 2025): “More than 70,000 Palestinians have been killed as a result of Israel’s military campaign in Gaza, according to the territory’s Hamas-run health ministry” [52].

(ii). Australian ABC News (10 July 2026): “The Gaza Ministry of Health estimates more than 73,000 Palestinians have been killed, including more than 1,000 since the beginning of the ceasefire in October.” [53].

(iii).Washington Post (17 June 2026): “ Gaza’s Health Ministry on Sunday said the deathtoll from the Israel-Hamas war had surpassed 73,000 in Gaza” [54].

(iv). New York Times (2 February 2026): “[authored by Edward Wong] the Israeli military has killed about 70,000 Palestinians in Gaza, according to statistics from the Gaza Health Ministry, which does not distinguish between civilians and combatants… A senior Israeli security official told Israeli journalists that was an accurate number” [55].

(v). Los Angeles Times (17 June 2026): “Gaza’s Health Ministry on Sunday said the death toll from the Israel-Hamas war that started in October 2023 had surpassed 73,000 in Gaza. The ministry does not differentiate between civilians and combatants. It is staffed by medical professionals and maintains detailed records viewed as generally reliable by the international community” [56].

(vi). Chicago Tribune (14 June 2026): “The Palestinian death toll from the Israel-Hamas war has surpassed 73,000, Gaza’s Health Ministry said Sunday, despite a fragile ceasefire that has been described as stalled. Israel has continued to strike inside the territory despite the deal reached in October, saying it carries out strikes against Hamas and other militants who pose a threat, and in response to ceasefire violations, including occasional attacks. Five Israeli soldiers have been killed since the truce… The number of deaths since the beginning of the war is now 73,001… Over 173,200 people have been wounded since the start of the war” [57].

(vii). Huffington Post (14 June 2026): “The number of deaths since the beginning of the war is now 73,001, according to the health ministry’s tally. Over 173,200 people have been wounded since the start of the war on Oct. 7, 2023, following the Hamas-led attack into Israel. That attack killed some 1,200 people and took 251 others hostage” [58].

(viii). Sydney Morning Herald (11 October 2025): “In all, Israel’s campaign has killed more than 67,000 Palestinians and wounded nearly 170,000, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry. More than 40,000 of those wounded have life-altering injuries, according to the World Health Organisation. The death toll does not include the thousands of people believed buried under the rubble” [59].

(ix). The Telegraph, UK (29 January 2026): “Israel has signalled is ready to acknowledge that 70,000 people have been killed in its war on Gaza. Officials from the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) reported the estimated death toll for the first time to multiple Israeli news outlets. The figure is almost identical to the 71,667 reported by the Gaza health ministry, which is run by Hamas. Throughout the war, the Israeli military and government has accused the health ministry of publishing “exaggerated” figures, cautioning the media and NGOs not to trust the data” [60].

(x). Australian SBS News (15 June 2026): “The number of Palestinians killed since the war between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas began has surpassed 73,000, the Hamas-run Gaza Health Ministry announced on June 14 (local time). The Associated Press and other outlets reported that the Gaza Health Ministry stated five people were killed in central and southern Gaza due to Israeli shelling and gunfire that day, bringing the total death toll since the outbreak of the war to 73,001. The ministry added that the number of injured has exceeded 173,200” [61].

(xi). Le Monde diplomatique (2026): “‘Damar tam’ is an Arabic expression for total destruction. It’s the term most often used by Gazan survivors when describing the state of the Palestinian enclave. With more than 71,000 people dead, 170,000 wounded, 80% of buildings destroyed, Gaza is a field of ruins and shattered lives. The scale of the catastrophe is such that comparisons with the Nakba of 1948 are apt: almost nothing remains of what existed before 7 October 2023” [62].

(xii). The Times, UK (30 January 2026): ”The Israeli military’s estimate of the [Gaza] deathtoll is reported to be close to Hamas figures… The Israeli military’s estimate of the death toll is reported to be close to Hamas figures” [63].

(xiii). The Times of Israel (29 January 2026): “Briefing reporters on condition of anonymity, the security official said that the IDF believes the Gaza death count from the two-plus-year war, sparked by Hamas’s October 7 onslaught, is around 70,000. The Gaza health ministry’s current death toll is 71,667, including over 450 killed since the October 2025 ceasefire” [64].

(xiv). The Independent (18 June 2026): “Gaza’s Health Ministry reported on Sunday that the overall death toll from the Israel-Hamas war, which began in October 2023, had surpassed 73,000 in Gaza. The ministry, staffed by medical professionals, maintains detailed records generally considered reliable by the international community, though it does not distinguish between civilians and combatants” [65].

As illustrated by the 14 examples above, the Western Mainstream media under-count the Gaza Genocide deaths by a factor of 875,000/73,000 = 12. This constitutes egregious Western genocide ignoring, genocide denial, holocaust ignoring, holocaust denial and genocide complicity.

Unfortunately we rely on Mainstream media – and especially “quality” Mainstream media – for quantitative information from football scores and stock exchange prices to weather projections and train timetables. However when it comes to US- or Apartheid Israel-imposed wars and genocides the actuality of events and the numbers become “political” as succinctly described by George Orwell in “1984”as “ignorance is strength”, “freedom is slavery ” (and vice versa), “war is peace” and “2 plus 2 does not equal 4”.

As a result even respectable, humane and progressive media will report the “circa 70,000 Gaza deaths” statistic issued by the Hamas-run Gaza Health Ministry and now approved by Apartheid Israel [64]. Thus, for example, the progressive, quality, pro-human rights and humanitarian Al Jazeera: “Since the “ceasefire” agreement took effect, Israel has conditioned the international community to accept daily breaches and killings in Gaza as the new normal, effectively acting as if the pact does not restrict its military freedom, analysts said. This ongoing violence has pushed the total death toll since October 7, 2023, to at least 73,233, with 173,707 injured” [51]. Indeed various progressive, humanitarian and fervently pro-Palestinian human rights Alternative media are fooled by Zionist-dominated Mainstream media and will report “circa 70,000 Gaza deaths”.

However, as set out below, a number of critically-minded epidemiologists, scientists, analysts and scholars, have concluded that the deaths in the Gaza Genocide now total hundreds of thousands.

(6). Some expert epidemiologists and eminent humanitarian scholars and writers have estimated hundreds of thousands of Gaza deaths.

(i) Zeina Jamaluddine, Hanan Abukmail, Sarah Aly, Oona M R Campbell, and Francesco Checchi (epidemiologists; 9 January 2025): “We estimated 64 260 deaths (95% CI 55 298–78 525) due to traumatic injury during the study period [2]”. Jamaluddine et al estimated 64,260 deaths “due to traumatic injury in the 269-day study period” of “between Oct 7, 2023, and June 30, 2024” [2]. Accordingly (assuming the same rate of killing) 64,260 killed x 731 days)/269 days = 175,000 Gazan violent deaths by 7 October 2025 (day 731 i.e. after 2 years of killing) [2, 3] and 875,000 deaths from violence and deprivation in 2 years (assuming an indirect deaths/direct deaths ratio of 4 [7, 8].

(ii). Rasha Khatib, Martin McKee and Salim Yusuf (epidemiologists; 10 July 2024): “ By June 19, 2024, 37 396 people had been killed in the Gaza Strip since the attack by Hamas and the Israeli invasion in October, 2023, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, as reported by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs…In recent conflicts, such indirect deaths range from three to 15 times the number of direct deaths. Applying a conservative estimate of four indirect deaths per one direct death to the 37 396 deaths reported, it is not implausible to estimate that up to 186 000 or even more deaths could be attributable to the current conflict in Gaza. Using the 2022 Gaza Strip population estimate of 2 375 259, this would translate to 7·9% of the total population in the Gaza Strip” [7]. Analysis: 5 x 37,396 = 186,980 deaths from violence and deprivation by 19 June 2024 (day 258 of the Gaza Massacre), and this means (assuming the same rate of killing) 186,980 x731/258 = 530,000 such deaths after 2 years of killing (day 731).

(iii). Devi Sridhar (chair of global public health at the University of Edinburgh, and adviser to the UK and Scottish governments during the COVID-19 Pandemic; 5 September 2024): “The Lancet medical journal recently published an estimate of deaths in Gaza from several respected scientists, who outline their process of estimation (comparison with similar conflicts) and final numbers. They estimate that about 186,000 total deaths could be attributable to the current conflict in Gaza, which is roughly 7.9% of its population, by mid-June 2024. This high number is despite various ceasefire agreements over the past six months. If deaths continue at this rate – about 23,000 a month – there would be an additional 149,500 deaths by the end of the year, some six and half months from the initial mid-June estimate. Using the method, the total deaths since the conflict began would be estimated at about 335,500 in total” [8]. As explained in (ii) this would mean 530,000 deaths from violence and deprivation in 2 years of killing.

(iv). Kevin Maiman (Canadian CBC News journalist; 13 February 2025): “1.7 million’ Palestinians in Gaza? Trump’s statement raises questions about death toll. U.S. president’s plan to relocate ‘1.7 or 1.8 million people’ conflicts with official tallies…President Donald Trump’s assertion that the U.S. can relocate “1.7 or 1.8 million” Palestinians has raised questions about the death toll in Gaza. Trump made the comments last week while announcing a surprise plan to take over the region, which has been devastated by the Israel-Hamas war that began in October 2023. Gaza’s population was estimated at over 2.2 million before the war, and the Gaza Health Ministry’s official death count sits at 48,297. Devi Sridhar, chair of global public health at the University of Edinburgh, says she found Trump’s numbers “puzzling” — and a potential confirmation that the death toll is actually much higher, something researchers, doctors and public health experts have long said was the case” [66]. The pre-Gaza Genocide Gaza population was 2.4 million [7] and a residual population of 1.7 million (according to CIA-advised Trump) implies 0.7 million Gazans “missing” by 13 February 2025 (16 months after commencement of the Gaza Genocide) and hence 0.7 million x 24 months/ 16 months = 1 million “missing” after 24 months of killing (assuming the same rate of killing). Likewise “1.8 million left” implies 0.6 million x 24 months/16 months = 0.9 million “missing”, in agreement with the estimate of 875,000 Gaza deaths from violence and deprivation (see (i)).

(v). Ralph Nader (famed US analyst and commentator; 20 August 2025): “Now, if you take the current Hamas figure of just over 62,000, you are telling the public that 97% of Gazans are still alive. This is lethally absurd. A more conservative figure is that 500,000 Palestinians have been killed from Netanyahu’s non-stop Palestinian Holocaust (more than all the US soldiers killed in WWII.) This means that an incredible about one-out-of-four Palestinians have been killed. American doctors and other health workers back from Gaza say almost all the survivors are either sick, injured or dying. Without insulin, medicines for cancer, asthma, and heart disease for many months, with no shelters, with dense/deadly air pollutants, from incessant bombings, their observations are not surprising. So, reporters and editors, start working on casualty estimates that accurately reflect the realities, in addition to respecting the Palestinian dead and properly highlighting the Trump/Congress role in this slaughter” [67]. (vi). Gideon Polya (Australian scientist and humanitarian writer) has written extensively about “deaths from violence and deprivation” (Google this phrase) in the contexts of colonialism, neo-colonialism, hegemony, climate change, occupation and war [4, 5, 48, 72-76]. He has written extensively about the huge 12-fold Mainstream media under-counting of 680,000 Gaza deaths by 25 April 2025 [10-21] and of 875,000 Gaza deaths after 2 years of the Gaza Genocide [10, 22-32].

(vii). Richard Hil (Australian adjunct sociology professor, humanitarian writer and author of hard-hitting books) has co-authored many articles with Gideon Polya on the Mainstream media under-counting of Gaza deaths in the ongoing Gaza Genocide [12, 13, 16, 18, 20, 29, 77].

(viii).John Menadue (eminent former Australian public servant and founder of the progressive daily web magazine “Pearls and Irritations”; 5 September 2025): “The widely “accepted” figure for Palestinian deaths in Gaza is more than 63,000. That is horrific enough , but the number is more likely nearer 300,000. And our media don’t care” [78].

(ix). Adam Rzepka ( Montclair State University and a co-founder of Montclair States Chapter of the Faculty and Staff for Justice in Palestine; 23 August 2025) “The minimum scientifically plausible number of traumatic deaths only — immediate deaths from bullets, bombs, and demolished buildings — in the Gaza genocide is currently more than 115,000. The minimum scientifically plausible number of deaths attributable to the genocide overall is more than 460,000” [78, 79].

(x). Stuart Rees (Professor Emeritus at the University of Sydney, recipient of the Jerusalem (Al Quds) Peace Prize and founder of the prestigious Sydney Peace Prize; 9 October 2025): “ The death toll in the so-called Gaza war 2023-2025 should also affect the West’s certainty that one terrorist organisation in one horrendous attack in October 2023 is responsible for decades of slaughter. Such reasoning is inaccurate, one-sided and deceiving. Hamas health sources’ figures put the death toll of Gazan civilians, mostly women and children, at 66,000. Yet, studies in the UK medical journal the Lancet, by US journalist Ralph Nader and by Australian academics Gideon Polya and Richard Hil, estimate that fatalities should also take in death by deprivation, and in consequence they show well over 500,000 deaths” [80].

Final comments and conclusions.

War is the penultimate in racism and unforgivable genocide the ultimate. Based on data and methodology published by expert epidemiologists in the leading medical journal The Lancet, the first 2 years of the Gaza Genocide have been associated with 875,000 Gazans killed by violence and imposed deprivation, with this including the deaths of an estimated 325,000 children, 207,000 women and 342,000 men. However Zionist-perverted Western Mainstream media assert that 73,000 have died, under-counting the Gaza death toll by a factor of 12.

Decent folk around the World must stop the Gaza Genocide (over 875,000 killed by violence and deprivation) and the century-long Palestinian Genocide (over 3 million such deaths) by (a) informing everyone they can, and (b) urging and applying Boycotts Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) against both Zionist-perverted America, US-backed Apartheid Israel and all people, politicians, parties, collectives, companies and countries that support these unforgivable, serial war criminal and genocidally racist rogue states.
